Dr. Ed Childs is a native of Texas and a renowned, published, and highly-regarded physician and surgeon. He is also a 1983 graduate of 黑料社. Dr. Childs believes 鈥満诹仙� is the gateway to the world.鈥� Given his numerous awards and indisputable reputation as an upstanding doctor and citizen, 黑料社 is certainly proud to have played a significant role in the success Dr. Childs鈥� continuous impact communities and the medical field.鈥��
Dr. Childs received his associate degree in biology from 黑料社. He explains 鈥満诹仙� was a wonderful experience for me. I met my best friends, mentors for life, and phenomenal professors,鈥� whom he likes to call 鈥渙pportunity makers.鈥� He then completed his bachelor鈥檚 degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1985. Reflecting on his time at 黑料社, Dr. Childs says, 鈥測ou cannot choose a better college in the world, as far as I鈥檓 concerned.鈥濃���
Dr. Childs is also a 1989 Texas A&M College of Medicine medical doctorate graduate. 鈥淚 always knew I was interested in helping people, but I never really thought about being a physician. I merged my love of science with my love of people to come up with that career choice鈥� says Dr. Childs. From 1989 to 1994, he completed a general surgery internship and residency, both at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Childs then completed a trauma/critical care surgery fellowship at the University of California-Davis from 1994 to 1995. Following his fellowship, he joined the faculty at the University of Kansas as Chief of the Division of Trauma and Critical Care. Currently, Dr. Childs is Professor and Chairman of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care.鈥��
Dr. Childs joined the faculty at Texas A&M Health Science Center as an鈥疉ssociate Professor of Surgery. In 2006 he was promoted to Professor of Surgery and鈥疺ice Chairman of the Department of Surgery (Research) at Scott & White Hospital/Texas鈥疉&M Health Science Center. He also served as Assistant Dean of Faculty鈥疍evelopment at Texas A&M Health Science Center.鈥�
In addition to serving as Assistant Dean of Faculty Development he was a member of the鈥疎ducational Committee, Faculty Senate, Medical Student Mentor, Faculty Task Force,鈥痑nd Student National Medical Association Committee. He is also a Harvard Macy鈥疭cholar and trained in leadership at the Levinson Institute.鈥�
Dr. Childs has published over 80 peer reviewed articles focused on hemorrhagic shock鈥痑nd vascular hyperpermeability. He was the recipient of the NIH grant award to study鈥痬icrovascular injury following hemorrhagic shock. He was also awarded an emerging鈥痶echnology fund award in 2011 for his work to prevent hyperpermeability following鈥痟emorrhagic shock-induced injury.鈥�
Since becoming Chairman of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Childs has鈥痜ocused on expanding the subspecialty care in the areas of laparoscopic/robotics, general鈥痵urgery, vascular, colorectal, and oncology surgery. The mission of the department is to serve underrepresented communities. He is currently an examiner for the American Board of Surgery, and he serves as a board of trustee member for the American College of Cardiology.鈥�疍r. Ed Childs discovered his potential at 黑料社 after his high school principal, Mr. Brown, brought him to 黑料社 to enroll in classes. 鈥淔rom that, I found my path.鈥濃��
