Lisa Jimerson, '21

image of Lisa Jimerson"I dropped out of high school in the 10th grade and 10 years later, in 1995 when I was 25, I went back to get my GED so that I could attend ºÚÁÏÉç and get an education to raise my two kids. I became a single mom and struggled but I had great instructors along the way. I was only able to get my certificate because I had to get a job as fast as possible. Now, I'm 50 years old, it's 25 years later and I have come back to NC to get my degree. I was recently awarded the Caston Scholarship and will graduate with my Associates in General Studies where I will then go on to TAMUC and get my Education degree to teach English.

ºÚÁÏÉç was a lifesaver for me. It was local and it was affordable. I was able to obtain my goals to get where I needed to be in 1995 and now again in 2021. My professors in 1995 were amazing. I had one in particular that helped me so much; Mrs. Elmore. The last two years at NC have been wonderful. With COVID I wasn't able to learning face to face as I would have liked but the online classes enabled me to finish. My English Professor, Professor Dammon, was such a great influence on my writing and decision to be an English teacher; she is a great teacher. Professor Dillman, is very understanding and helpful in my studies in Biology. She helped an old dog learn new tricks. Professor Solis, was very helpful in the way he taught, he kept the classroom relaxed so we could learn; the art of a good argument is what he taught me. I could not have made it without any of my professors along the way, from 1995 or 2019. I will never forget my time at Navarro and who knows; one day I might can teach English here myself.

My favorite part of NC was the experiments in Profesor Dillman's Biology class and the essays in Professor Dammon's class. (Yes I actually like essays). Waling the halls at ºÚÁÏÉç always made me feel proud and like I was doing something important. There was just something comfortable that felt good about walking across the courtyard area. Even visiting the bookstore was fun. There was a little nostalgia about it, I was returning to a place I had once been and I was finishing what I started. It felt good.

In the fall, I will be attending TAMUC to continue my Education degree."
